Wisconsin Senate Approves Bill Allowing Human Remains to Be Dumped Into Sewer

The Wisconsin Senate passed Senate Bill 228 on Tuesday, allowing the dissolution of human bodies in a chemical solution, a method known as alkaline hydrolysis. This process, which involves water, lye, heat, and pressure, breaks down tissue into a liquid form referred to as “slurry” with “a consistency similar to motor oil”, and is subsequently disposed of in the sewer system. The remaining bones are reportedly pulverized and returned to the family in an urn.

Despite objections from Wisconsin's five Catholic bishops, the bill now moves to the state Assembly. The Wisconsin Catholic Conference (WCC) opposes the legislation, arguing that alkaline hydrolysis fails to respect the inherent dignity of the human body as ordained by God.

This process is often used to dispose of the bodies of cattle that die from mad cow disease. It is already legal in 20 states.

This means that in 20 states, human remains have been part of wastewater for years now. Wherever wastewater is treated and subsequently dumped or recycled in those states, the “slurry” that remains after these cremations is, too. In California, one of the states where this is legal, San Diego recently approved plans to recycle wastewater into drinking water.
